Taiwan: Four Two

Taiwan: the land of marble ledges, no skate stoppers, shoddily build hand rails, majestic temples, and little to no traffic law enforcement. When it comes to ideal locations for a skate trip you would need some strong arguments to convince me there is a better place than Taiwan.

Ryan Fyfe-Brown, Jordan Marowitch, and I stumbled upon skate paradise. Equipping ourselves with highly unreliable, extremely cheap rental scoots, we blundered our way from Taipei to Taichung City; crossed the foggy mountains to Haulien; and after repeated flat tires, multiple breakdowns, and pristine beach camping, we ended the long way around the south of the island in Kaohsiung City.

The trip was finished off with New Year’s fireworks at the former world's tallest building, Taipei 101, and the discovery that we were on Taiwanese National News after deciding to drink a beer on top of a bridge in Taroko National Park while awaiting the scooter repair man.

With uncanny spots, friendly people, and stunning scenery, Taiwan should be added to your list of places to skate. You won’t regret it.—Martin Walker
